Football walkons who should get scholarships next season...

As a former walk on myself I keep tabs on this closely and was wondering if anyone had any inside info on any guys getting rewarded with scholarships after their play last year. By my count at least three deserve it.

1. Cole Bunce - Did an OUTSTANDING job filling in for an injured J Song. Made 6 of 7 FGs and has had exceptional kickoff placement and depth for two years in a row. Probably the guy to beat going into next year.

2. Adam Nunez - Not sure if he is on scholarship yet or not but as a two year starting punter who has done a very good job especially on pooch punts...he definitely deserves a scholarship.

3. Daythan Davis - Extremely valuable short yardage FB and special teams player. Probably gonna have a bigger role next year. Was on scholarship at Southern Miss...talented guy.

Anybody else I'm missing???

Cole Bunce did a great job this year.

And in 2016...he was our starting kickoff guy and had a ton of touchbacks and great placement.

The staff needs to unass...currently a favorite word of mine...some scholarships to specialists to have done great work for TWO years in a row.

Is Song a senior next year?
Next year will be his 4th season. Academically, maybe. But, he kicked off 1 time in 2015, red shirted in 16 because of injury, kicked a few times this year before calling it a season and thus has 2 years of eligibility left. I think he's kicked 8 field goals so considering 150k in scholarship money and probably at least another 50k in all the other stuff, he's sitting about 25k per field goal.

Maybe he's a great kicker on the occasions he's available, maybe Bunce has passed him by. Very strange situation but I haven't seen any evidence that TCU is recruiting any other kickers.

From what I’ve seen of Song, there’s no doubt in my mind he’s the best kicker we have. The ball comes off his foot right and he probably has the strongest leg too. But I’ve got a hunch he’d rather watch from the sideline instead of be counted on to hit a clutch kick. Just a hunch.

I bet we sign a kicker in the 19 or 20 class if the feel Bunce can handle it in 2019. Seem to remember Patterson putting a kicker on scholarship every four years

I agree Song probably has the best leg talent but Bunce has shown a very strong and more importantly accurate kickoff leg. He's always around the numbers and has about a 33% touchback rate which is very good. A kickoff guy, like a punter might as well be a member of the defense...they first pretty much decide where the opponent starts so GP has to understand their value.

Plus Bunce has proven to be a very accurate and clutch kicker that has consistent ball flight and good trajectory. He is an above average D1 kicker in my opinion on both kickoffs and FGs. He deserves a scholarship.

Obviously not my call but I think it is perfectly acceptable to have a scholarship kicker, kickoff guy and punter. Especially if they are all exceptional. And especially if we are concerned about depth because of injuries.

The offseason sucks
I think all 3 should be on scholly. If you are a starting specialist you should be on scholarship. Daythan played a whole lot in our power packages and its always nice to have a FB type on your team for these occasions. Depending on how many we sign at the February signing day will probably sort some of this out.

Agree with all that...and hopefully you are right about post signing date decisions.

When I played in the Early 90s....I thought there was a rule if you were a 2 year walk on and got on schoarlship it did not count towards the 85. Anybody know if that is still true.
