TCU Baseball 2018: Summer Thread

From D1 Baseball, 8 for Omaha 2018: TCU makes the cut!

Aaron Fitt:
The Frogs have a lot of key pieces to replace in the lineup (Austen Wade, Cam Warner, Nolan Brown, Evan Skoug, Ryan Merrill and Elliott Barzilli), plus a proven big-game weekend starter (Brian Howard). But Florida’s run to the national title showed us just how far elite pitching can take a club with a modest offense, and TCU should be elite on the mound once again. Jared Janczak returns to anchor the rotation, and lefthander Nick Lodolo should make the leap to superstardom as a sophomore. Sean Wymer has the three-pitch arsenal and physicality to make a seamless transition into the weekend rotation as well, and flame-thrower Durbin Feltman will return to the back of the bullpen, which also has a tough sidearm setup man in Cal Coughlin. Talented rising sophomore righty Charles King gives this staff another frontline arm capable of starting or relieving. That pitching core should rival Florida’s for the best in college baseball next season.

The offense has more question marks, but the return of Luken Baker from injury will give the lineup a fearsome centerpiece, and Josh Watson should rebound after a disappointing sophomore year. Rising sophomore Zach Humphreys looks like a rising star, and Connor Wanhanen will be back for his senior year, giving the Frogs another seasoned run producer. Power-hitting shortstop Adam Oviedo, a 35th-round pick by the Twins, is a safe bet to make it to Fort Worth, where he should make an instant impact. And incoming righthander Caleb Sloan will give the pitching staff another premium arm.

Kendall Rogers:
The Horned Frogs could be a lot like Ole Miss offensively at times last season, going through some growing pains at times throughout the season. The difference, though? The Frogs will have one of the nation’s elite starting rotations with the return of Jared Janczak and Nick Lodolo, while righthander Sean Wymer was terrific out of the bullpen and will make a seamless transition to the rotation. Furthermore, TCU welcomes back Charles King and Durbin Feltman, both big-time arms out of the pen, while Cal Coughlin will continue to provide a funky look on the back end as well.

There is legitimate concern about this TCU offense, however. The Frogs lost their starting catcher, third baseman, shortstop and second baseman, and have some serious holes to fill, but there’s talent coming back, too. For instance, Josh Watson returns to patrol the outfield and should have a rebound year, while Connor Wanhanen provides stability and leadership and Zach Humphreys has a bright future. TCU, of course, also welcomes back a premier power hitter in Luken Baker. TCU’s pitching prowess should buy the offense some time next season.

Other than Wymer playing on Team USA, has anyone seen where any of our other guys will be playing this summer--Cape Cod, Northwoods, etc?

Ok thanks

So do we have an infield coming in this year after the draft since all we have left is 2 guys fighting over 1st base?

The biggest need is finding s reliable glove at short. You can get by with baker at first with Wanhanen able to fill if needed, Landestoy at 2nd and Franson at 3rd if you need college experience. But we will have a lot more options and competition.

Boulware, Cardozo, Hanoian are middle infielders. RJ Lan could compete st 3rd. Oviedo is. SS/OF.
